SENSORY POETRY:
Sensory Poetry is all about getting your reader to feel as if they are in the place you are describing by using SENSORY LANGUAGE. These crafts are fun and engaging for your students!
When SENSORY LANGUAGE is used effectively, you can almost smell, see, hear, taste and feel what a sensory poem is describing. That is why it is so important. It is a great launching place for poetry, or even just a great way to celebrate all of your hard work this year!
Bring in some popcorn, fresh fragrant flowers, etc. & really hook your students into your unit.
Once they master this concept, they will be looking for those important SENSORY Words in the poetry they read as they move through elementary school. Then they will understand poetry better. But most of all……Sensory Poetry is just FUN!
Here’s the plan:
Modeling – It’s All You! Choose one of the example poems and model it for your students. Take it from brainstorming to final piece. Think out loud so they will get the process. Have all the pieces of your celebration cut out to make this part go fast. You might lose them if you spend time cutting it out while they wait.
Guided Practice –
It’s All Y’all! Choose a poem from the packet and do it together getting input from the students, guiding them through it. Do the same as above, but let them get involved this time. (celebration is optional)
Independent Practice –
It’s All Them! Choose a different poem from the packet and have them do it independently. Use the grading rubric to grade it if desired. Once complete, celebrate with the craftivity!
There are 7 sensory poetry sets:
Each set has Brainstorm and Plan, Write and Celebrate.
• Spring
• Popcorn
• Ice Cream
• Christmas
• Easter
• Beach
• Autumn
There is also an example of each poem and what the celebration will look like.
Have fun with this GREAT UNIT! :)
