Description

3-Digit Addition & Subtraction Practice ~ Crack the Code! is a fun and engaging way for students to get computation practice with 3-digit numbers. They’ll enjoy the challenge and feedback is immediate through solving the puzzle (a quote from The Rainbow Fish) correctly.

This activity is differentiated with two versions of the same puzzle. One of the puzzles includes the author and title of the book as part of the puzzle to be solved, and the other includes only the quote from the book, with title and author given. While the problems are the same in both versions, the letters assigned to the problems are different and the problems are mixed up, so students that need fewer problems can still be successful with a different version of the same code. Both puzzles are set up with the conventional format for addition (with carrying) and subtraction (including borrowing/regrouping).

Included:

One Puzzle With Two Versions

Version 1: With book title and author’s name part of the puzzle- 25 problems (21 needed to solve the puzzle)

Version 2: Book title and author’s name given, solving for quote- 16 problems

Both Answer Keys

A Practice Code (color & BW) to show students how to solve these types of puzzles.
