Description

Kick off your unit on 3D shapes with this fun-filled resource! Students will identify and describe solid figures, including spheres, cubes, cylinders, cones, and rectangular prisms. Students will discover and compare the attributes of 3D shapes such as the number of edges, faces, and vertices of each shape. Students will sort 2D and 3D shapes, as well as identify 3D solids in the real world. This resource includes full-color posters, worksheets, activities, ideas, and suggestions for making your geometry unit a blast.

Pyramids and triangular prisms are introduced in this unit, but the emphasis is on sphere, cone, cube, cylinder, and rectangular prism.

Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”).
Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).
Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.
