What educators are saying

I am using this to combat the summer slide. The passages are interesting, grade-level appropriate, and contain enough rigor to build upon skills learned in class.
I love this resource. The comprehension questions are higher level thinking as well some easier questions. I use this resource for homework, towards the end of the year. I also use this for early finisher work. Highly recommend!

The multiple choice questions focus on topics such as:

As an added bonus. . . Wouldn't it be great for students to build awareness of career options while also preparing for end of year tests?

Over the years, I have found that students who can imagine themselves in successful careers have much more motivation to excel in school. I’m thrilled to offer these passages designed to help students learn about various careers while also developing listening, reading and writing skills.

If you've ever pondered how to fit career awareness into an already busy schedule, combine career exploration with test prep and reading comprehension!

Students reading at (or about) Guided Reading Levels O and P are generally able to read these passages and then answer the text evidence questions.

Depending on the level of your students, the passages in this set can be ideal for small group instruction, close reading, assessments and/or use as independent work, morning work or homework.

As students are learning to use evidence to support their thinking, I have them find and highlight the section of text they use to justify their answer.

The following passages are included in this pack:

★ Henry's Landscaping and Lawn Services

★ Breaking News: Life As A Reporter

★ Patricia Hanson: Computer Scientist

★ An Author’s Life: Vision and Revision

★ Cole Raftis: Real Estate Agent

★ Ben Swanson: Yellowstone Tour Guide

★ Building A Career As A Mason

★ Architecture: The Intersection of Science, Engineering, and Art

★ A Day in the Life of John Williams: X-Ray Technician

★ Simon Mills: Solar Power Enthusiast and Entrepreneur

★ Mandy Michaels: Mechanical Engineer

★ Catering: So Much More than Meets the Eye!

★ Lena Hutchinson: Soccer Player

★ The Pharmacist: A Vital Part of the Healthcare Team

★ Ikigai – A Key to Success?

These activities support the following Student Outcomes and related Common Core Standards:

★ Students will identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text (ELA-Literacy.RI.2.2).

★ Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text (ELA-Literacy.RI.2.4 and RI.3.4).

★ Students will ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers (ELA-Literacy.RL.2.1 & RI3.1 ).

★ Students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension (ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.4 and RF.3.4).

★ Students will read grade-level text with purpose and understanding (ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.4.A and RF.3.4.A).

Thanks so much for stopping by and taking a look!

Sincerely, Anne Gardner (NBCT, Literacy)
