7th Grade House Design Project
Description
Project-Based Learning! Apply the concepts of ratio, proportion & scale, geometric construction, and area calculation with an engaging, realistic project. Students become architects and design a house for a client. This 17-page booklet includes Lesson Plans, Activity & Key, WebQuest, and the Design Project with Rubric. Everything needed for a Real-World Application of the first two Geometry Standards (Scale Drawings and Drawing Shapes) with spiraling back to Ratio & Proportion.
Design a house that meets the needs of the client. Working in teams of two, this exercise is very beneficial for developing collaborative skills in a creative atmosphere. The students are given a description of the client with a list of needs and wants. Their job is to design a house for that client. You can have teams provide a sales pitch at the end, competing with other teams for the job.
Research has shown incorporating hands-on, project-based activities into the curriculum improves student engagement. When students engage, they are attending to the task at hand. Our motto Play = Learn is born from this concept. Our standards-based games and puzzles have proven to be an effective tool to solidify students’ grasp of math concepts.
