This film guide, will move students through episodes 1 - 6, of the PBS series Africa's Great Civilizations.
In episodes one and two, students will learn about the African continent's history and impact on civilizations globally starting with Human existence and leading through the exploration of religions in Africa.
In episodes three and four, students will learn about the African continent's history and impact on civilizations globally starting with the revolutionary transformation of North and West Africa through commercial and manufacturing growth and end with a journey through the golden age of Africa and the expansion of wealth and prosperity among Africa's cosmopolitan cities and nations.
In episodes five and six, students will learn about the changes within Africa brought about by the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and wrapping up with European exploration of the continent including colonization and the impacts of Africa's resources on the people and those attempting to take Africa over with the discovery of gold and diamonds.
Each episode is just over 50 minutes making this activity perfect for six standard class periods. Questions range in style from fill in the blank to true/false to short answer. All questions will go in order a minimum of 19 questions per episode. I have used this resource in both an African studies course as well as a World History/Ancient Civilizations course. You could separate this film guide and easily only use one of the episodes within different units.
