Description

Area and perimeter project that goes beyond the worksheet! Use as an end of the year math project, test prep, or any time! This differentiated, high-interest, engaging math project will have students solving real-world math problems and working with a budget (financial literacy) while practicing math problem-solving skills.

This task is differentiated on three levels and requires critical thinking from your students. Students will use all operations in this real-world project.

This plan and build a treehouse is perfect for engaging your students any time of the year, during test prep season, as a fast finisher project, or anytime to promote independence for all levels of students. Use it with your whole class or as an enrichment activity.

Tasks require students to work with money and calculate addition, subtraction, and multiplication with whole numbers. Students will also use their error analysis and math critiquing skills.

Each task also has a “Released from Duty” memo (extension word problem related to the task) for an additional challenge. This memo is designed to help students critique the work of others.

This project also provides an opportunity for students to work together and present their mathematical thinking and creative work to their classmates.

This set includes both a print and a digital option.

A square with side length 1 unit, called “a unit square,” is said to have “one square unit” of area, and can be used to measure area.
Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by tiling it, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths.
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
