What educators are saying

I haven't used this Spare Change yet, but I have used the Winter Edition one. This always makes for a fun day, and students LOVE when they come in the room and this is up on the board!
My students enjoyed this resource. They enjoy debating and judging each other; this was a fun way to do both.

Description

Practicing argument, counteragrument, rhetoric, and claim statements can now be one of the most FUN things you do in your classroom! The Spare Change Gameshow gives students current, funny, and engaging topics to debate either whole-class or in small groups, and students can have a good time while practicing their best argumentation skills.

HOW TO PLAY:

  1. First, you'll need some spare change. This is to flip a coin to see which side of the argument students will have to defend.
  2. Choose your option: whole class (two teams) or small groups (groups of three works best)
  3. Let students choose their favorite category.
  4. Share with them one of the claim statements for that category. Then, they need to flip a coin and see which side they have to argue: "yes" or "no"! This ensures that students are practicing argument even when they don't already agree with a particular stance.
  5. Students get 60 seconds to brainstorm their arguments, 60 seconds to argue, and other students or a guest decides the winner!

WHAT IS INCLUDED:

  • The interactive slide deck to run the game. Slides are hyperlinked together so all you need to do is some clicking.
  • Four categories with four prompts each for a total of sixteen claim statements
  • A teacher directions sheet with thorough information and ideas for implementation.

WHEN TO USE:

This gameshow is a perfect addition to your review lessons. It's also great to use in the midst of learning a new argumentative strategy. You can require students to use a particular skill ("Your argument must have one strand that focuses on pathos!") as you introduce them throughout the year.

WHO IS IT BEST SUITED FOR?

The prompts and the setup of the gameshow itself is best suited for more advanced middle school students up through seniors in high school.

This gameshow can also be turned into a writing activity. After the fun is over, have students choose one of the prompts that really spoke to them and have students flesh our their full response in writing.
