Description
Building a roller coaster and a ping pong ball launcher will be used to teach students about balanced and unbalanced forces. This roller coaster lab is a great way to keep your students engaged! Students will look at patterns of motion to predict future motion. Great lessons and a one-page informational text passage on balanced and unbalanced forces are included.
This resource includes:
- Two hands-on STEM Engineering lessons
- informational text article
- response pages
- interactive notebook flaps
- Slide Show on Planning an Investigation
3-PS2-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.
3-PS2-2. Make observations and/or measurements of an object’s motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.
This resource also addresses standards for Utah SEEd for third grade.
Utah SEEd 3.3.1 Plan and carry out investigations that provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. Examples could include an unbalanced force on one side of a ball causing it to move and balanced forces pushing on a box from both sides producing no movement.
This resource addresses the following science concepts:
Balanced Forces
Unbalanced Forces
Acceleration
Momentum
Gravity
Friction
Design Thinking
Looking for Patterns
Making Predictions
Drawing Conclusions
Planning an Investigation
Measuring
