What educators are saying

This is a great resource to practice addition and subtraction in a different way. As an additional challenge, you can have students correct the false equations. Thanks for a great resource!
My students enjoyed the cutting and pasting part of this. A bit different from just a normal worksheet. Kept them engaged during small group and independent work times.

Description

Balancing Equations - True or False Equivalent Number Sentence Worksheets Grades 1-3

For students to effectively progress from arithmetic to algebraic thinking, they must understand equivalence. Unfortunately, there are many students who do not understand the meaning of the equal sign and thereby experience problems interpreting, modifying, and answering equations, specifically those that incorporate multiple numerical terms.

Equivalence activities can also be used to develop student's relational thinking.

This product includes:
- 18 worksheets
- 18 answer keys
- Resource instructions

Students will use their problem-solving skills to answer equations involving addition, and subtraction, within 100.
Students are asked to investigate each number sentence. The goal of the activity will be to determine if they are equivalent. Students will cut and paste either "true" or "false" in the box next to each number sentence.

Differentiated Learning Activities
Activities become progressively harder as students proceed through each sheet. Advanced students will move through to level 6 worksheets. Those experiencing difficulties may remain on level 1 worksheets to practice the basic concepts involved with equivalent number sentences.

Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. Understand the following as special cases:
Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
