Bats and Owls Unit – Comparing Bats and Owls PowerPoint, Activities, and Craft

This All About Bats and Owls unit is a fall favorite! Complete with an informational “All About Bats and Owls” PowerPoint, a bat craft and nocturnal animals hat/crown, and lots of other activities, this set will have your students comparing and contrasting owls and bats. With eye-catching display materials including headers for three anchor charts along with colorful vocabulary word posters and word wall cards, children will have what they need to read, talk, and write about bats and owls. This unit teaches students about the life cycles, classification, habits, and characteristics of two of our favorite creatures of the night!

What’s included in this owls and bats unit?

This “All About Bats and Owls” thematic unit includes materials to help you integrate learning about owls and bats into science, literacy, and math in your primary classroom.

Here’s what’s included:

✔ Informational PowerPoint Slideshow “Let’s Compare and Contrast Bats and Owls”

This slideshow is packed full of information about owls and bats. Filled with clear photographs, this presentation includes nonfiction text that compares and contrasts the life cycles, habits, characteristics, and bodies of bats and owls. This PowerPoint slideshow is 28 slides long and is copied at the end of the PDF in addition to the PPT file (for those without access to PowerPoint).

✔ Bats and Owls Vocabulary Word Posters and Word Wall Cards

The included vocabulary word posters, each with a photo and a simple definition are: hibernate, nocturnal, mammal, bird, predator, prey, camouflage, and echolocation. The word wall cards, each with an illustration, are: bat, owl, owlet, pup, wing, beak, feather, fur, and night.

✔ Anchor Chart Materials and Posters

Printable materials are included to help you create meaningful bat and owl anchor charts with your students. You’ll find what you need to make two KWL charts, a “Can, Have, Are” chart for each animal, and a comparison Venn diagram. In addition, this set includes diagrams of bats and owls and two short songs to display.

This informational easy reader is designed to be printed double-sided, using only one sheet of paper. Students can color the pictures and practice reading and print concepts. This book has one simple sentence per page.

▶ Bat Life Cycle Craft: This bat life cycle craft includes two versions of visual instructions for students.

▶ Bat and Owl Hats: Use sentence strips to complete these simple hats that include visual directions sheets for students. These crowns have a place for students to write an animal fact and show off their knowledge.

▶ Thematic Printables: This section includes a selection of reading passages and math skill worksheets with a bat and owl theme.

How do I use this All About Bats and Owls unit?

Begin by accessing students’ background knowledge about bats and owls by having a class discussion. As you discuss, fill in the “K” (What I Know) and “W” (What I Want to Know) columns of the KWL charts. Follow up with the PowerPoint slideshow, which can be read aloud in one sitting or can be used across several days. Young children will need time to discuss the information as it is presented, so be sure to build in time for conversations and questions! Upon completion of the PowerPoint (or as you go along), have students help fill in the final column of the KWL chart.

To guide students toward informational writing about bats and owls, begin with the “Can, Have, Are” charts, having the students help determine what you should write in each section (sample charts are included). Students can then begin to work on their own organizers which will scaffold them toward writing three informational sentences about bats and owls.

The bats and owls Venn diagram and the accompanying cut and glue sort page help students compare and contrast the two animals. This will guide students as they write about bats and owls.

The bat life cycle craft can be completed as a center or as a whole or small group activity.

The original bat and owl songs (to be sung to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”) help students remember facts about owls and bats while also working on memorization. Consider having students come up with hand motions to go along with the song.

The thematic activities can be completed in any order (and you can pick and choose based on the needs and levels of your students.

Have students make bat and/or owl hats to culminate their studies and encourage them to share facts with anyone who asks about their hats!
