Description
This product includes a 19-page guided reading packet, 1 final test, and 3 section quizzes. Each of these materials is great for teaching Beowulf with all grade and ability levels. The download includes PDF versions of all materials in order to ensure compatibility across devices, as well as editable Word Docs that can be altered to best meet your students' needs! This resource is also great for distance, online, or hybrid classrooms!
The guided reading packet was created with the Common Core in mind, requiring students to demonstrate comprehension and analysis skills for reading a fictional text. The questions range in difficulty, but most are designed to target higher-order thinking skills through a thorough evaluation of several aspects of the narrative. A separate answer key (both in PDF and Word Doc form) is also provided with this product.
The guided reading packet contains the following:
- A brief overview of the poem's context
- Pre-reading questions to promote student engagement
- A 12-question WebQuest to explore the poem's context and the epic poetry genre
- A character list with pictures and descriptions
- A list of 15 vocabulary words that students can use to talk or write about the text. The list is in a table that requires students to identify the words' parts of speech, definitions, and synonyms.
- 73 guided reading questions that are broken down into smaller sections. The questions are designed to help students make sense of the plot, then move beyond it in order to meaningfully analyze character development, the cultural values embedded in the text, and author's/speaker's purpose.
- 13 reflection questions that can be used as conversation starters, warm-up writing exercises, essay prompts, Socratic Seminar questions, test questions, group dialogues, etc.
Note: The packet is intended to be used with Burton Raffel's abridged translation of the text. Both a PDF and Word Doc version of this translation are included in the download for your convenience!
The final test is fully aligned with the packet, and is intended to assess students' abilities to think critically about the poem. It contains 20 objective multiple-choice questions designed to test a range of comprehension and analysis skills. The test also includes 2 short answer responses, as well as 1 extended essay. An answer key is provided on the final page of the document.
Additionally, this product contains 3 section quizzes that can be used as comprehension checks, warm-ups, exit tickets, or brief assessments. Each contains 5-6 objective questions, and an answer key is provided on the final page of each document.
