What educators are saying

Fun. I really liked how there was a variety of different skills needed to figure out each puzzle, so each student in a group could be successful. The prep wasn't too intensive. I will invest in locks and lock boxes though for that added layer of interest.
Such a fun activity to do with my students at the beginning of the year before jumping into the curriculum!

Description

In this hands on escape room activity, students solve a forensic mystery using science, teamwork, and critical thinking. In the crime scene activities, students analyze 4 different pieces of evidence and keep track of evidence and suspects. They use their power of observations to “crack the case” and determine which suspect is guilty.

This activity can be done all at once in the format of an escape room to try to “beat the clock” – about 45 minutes to complete or it can be broken up into different days/lessons for each piece of evidence.

Overview of activities:

Unknown Liquid– Students measure the pH of an unknown liquid to determine its identity.

DNA Analysis– Students look a pictures of DNA electrophoresis gels to identify the source of the DNA.

Blood typing – Students perform a blood type test to determine which suspect blood from the crime scene belongs to.

Hair Analysis – Student look closely has hair samples

Finally, with all the evidence, students figure out who the evidence points to.

Students are immersed in the experience by following a fun and engaging story line that puts them right in the middle of the action. As students complete each activity, they are given a code to enter to open an electronic document to move through the case. Once they have completed the final activity, they will have enough evidence to determine who did it.

The activity can be run with printed copies of the pages, or you can use a digital version that requires minimal printing.
