Description

Let’s go on a camping trip! This resource targets NEGATION in an engaging and purposeful manner. It also targets ‘WHY’ questions as students are expected to justify their answers.

The packet includes the following activities:

  • Packing a backpack: The students will be asked to pack their camping backpacks. In doing so, they will need to decide whether they will take an item or not. The students will practice using negation in sentences (e.g., “I will not pack my mittens”) as well as providing a reason for their decision (e.g., “I will not pack my mittens because the weather is too hot”).

A Build-a-Sentence visual board is included to help students with sentence formulation. The reasons for not taking an item were grouped into three categories to facilitate the explaining task:

  • the weather is too hot
  • there is no electricity at the campsite
  • the lake is no longer frozen

  • Choosing the perfect camping spot: The students made it to the campsite! They will be asked to grab their binoculars to look around and find the perfect spot to set up their tents. Oh no! Some places are not good spots for a tent. The students will need to look at the visual cards and decide if the card shows a good spot or not. The students will be asked to explain their answers.

With this activity, the students will practice using negation in sentences and answering ‘why’ questions.

  • Listening to spoken directions: The students will listen to various instructions with negation. A tracking sheet is included to record the students’ performance in this listening task.
