Middle Schoolers LOVE probability!
This is a GREAT lesson around Halloween when the kids are already hyped up on sugar and want to 'talk' to their classmates.
This activity allows the students to DISCOVER the differences between EXPERIMENTAL and THEORETICAL probability and connect it to everyday experiences. The probability lesson lends itself to fractions, decimals, percents, data collection, rational & irrational numbers, statistical graphs (box and whiskers, frequency tables...), measures of central tendency, and reflection. The experiment will create lively discussions on fairness, estimation, predictions, and many other reflections from a "middle-school" mind!
I have included ideas for extension and images to aid you on Power Points or Smart Boards.
This will be one of your go-to lessons on days when the kids are just not into a traditional learning experience. I keep fun sized skittles in my cabinets for just those occasions!
