Description
Let your students experience 6 musical careers by holding a job fair and letting them complete a project based on the career they chose!
Start with the 20-slide presentation about 6 careers: music teacher, music therapist, music producer, performer, composer, and DJ.
Next, display the posters for each job around the room and let students walk around while reading each poster. Place applications for each job near the posters. They can decide which one they want to apply for and begin filling out their application.
Finally, "hire" your students as the 6 careers. Give each student a packet with directions/template to complete a project for that career. Everyone presents when they finish!
Here is a brief description of each project:
- DJ: Create a playlist based on an event you are given (birthday party, Christmas party, graduation, school dance, sports store opening and wedding are included).
- **A "research packet" is included with song suggestions for each event if you do not want your students using the internet to look for songs
- Composer: write a jingle, a theme song for a tv character, a piece/song about a storm, or a piece/song of your choice.
- Music Therapist: Present a session about how to calm down through music, how emotions connect to music, music and memorization, or music's positive impact.
- Music Producer: Work with a performer on their song selection and stage presence, create a marketing campaign to draw a crowd to the performance.
- Music Teacher: Design and teach a lesson about a music topic of your choice.
- Performer: Choose the music for your performance, rehearse for the performance using a checklist, add "special effects," and perform for the class.
Each packet is 4 pages. You can also incorporate technology by using online mixing sites for the DJ and music producer careers.
My students really enjoyed this at the end of the year (but it works any time of year!) It took us between 4 to 5 class periods to go through the presentation, have the job fair, work on the projects, and present them. Many of them said it was their favorite thing we did all year!
I hope you have the same success I did with this project!
