Description

If you and your students are learning about the history of child labor, or you are looking for an interesting close reading activity - this resource is for you! Close reading with song lyrics has proven to be very helpful to my students. This resource will help integrate this teaching idea into social studies and history lessons! In this 9-page packet, students will read the lyrics Newsies "Seize the Day." The song explains the feelings of newspaper boys when they were forming their union to fight the newspaper companies in the early 1900's. Not only will students learn about a historical topic, but you’ll also get to test out a fun, new way to implement close reading with your students!

Child Labor CLOSE Read Using Newsies Song Lyrics - History & Reading Activity Includes:

  • Article about Newsies
  • Song lyrics
  • 8 close read questions
  • 3 graphic organizers to further understanding.

The song included will allow students to think deeply using the questions that are based on each song, as well as to further their understanding of how to pick text apart. The lyrics, the metaphors, and the overall theme of the song will create conversation with your students which will have them thinking deeply while reading and listening to the lyrics. Song lyrics can be used without copyright infringement. The actual musical versions of the songs are NOT included in this package. There are all available from iTunes and other online media sources for $1.29 (or less) each. For this CLOSE read, I used the Broadway version, which is available from iTunes.

See What Other Teachers Are Saying . . .

I used this nice lesson from Newsies to reinforce the concept of child labor. This provided an excellent preview for our Charles Dickens unit as well as some awesome musical theater.

⭐ Newsies is my favorite musical. I love this time period and wanted to share it with my students. I did not use the lyric analysis lesson as written, but we did use the background info handout. Thanks for saving me some time!

⭐ During state testing, we used this resource as a way to still learn but in a less strenuous way.  We used this resource while watching the movie.  Using this resource and the others that I had allowed me to cover multiple standards, during a very stressful time, in a way that was beneficial to the students.  They enjoyed learning about this topic and it kept them focused while they watched and reinforced that the songs tell part of the story.  Thank you for this resource.  I'll be using it again next year!!
