Description
Use mentor texts as inspiration for creative writing in your middle or high school English class. They help students get started as they practice different narrative techniques in their writing.
I created these writing assignments because I wanted to link my students’ writing to their reading. Each one is inspired by a special narrative technique in a popular young adult novel. The students do not have to have read the text to do the assignment, but it may inspire them to pick it up and give it a try!
Each creative writing assignment includes a link to the book's description on Amazon. There, students can “look inside” the book to see the technique highlighted in the writing assignment. Alternatively, if you have the book on your shelves, they can check out the real thing!
Currently, there are assignments that link to the following texts:
• Everything Everything
• The Sky is Everywhere
• Tell Me Three Things
• Salt to the Sea
ADDED SEPTEMBER, 2019:
Each creative writing assignment comes with directions, exemplars, graphic organizers, and a rubric.
