If your Ceramics students are like mine, you know that students do NOT wish to spend studio time learning about ceramics history! But as art teachers, we would love to include ceramics history in our classes to enhance and enrich our students’ understanding of human history, to connect this human history to what students are actually creating in class, and add a tremendous amount of depth to the course.
Solution: I spent a summer creating six very simple “Who”, “What”, “When”, and “Where” ceramics history handouts and worksheets to pass out during the last 3-4 minutes of class, (or bell ringer) after students have finished cleaning-up for the day. This is a reading-for-information activity. Each worksheet has approximately 5-6 questions to answer from the handout. Simple, basic, brief, and easy. Just enough to get them interested, and won’t take time away from their projects. It fills those awkward few minutes between clean-up and dismissal bell. And, you can begin the next class by showing additional examples/videos or presenting further.
Match them with your hand building units: Use the Paleolithic worksheet during your Pinch Unit, Use the Mesopotamia worksheet during your Wheel Unit, Pre-Columbian worksheet during your Coil Unit, Greek worksheet during your Coil Vessel Project, Egyptian worksheet during your Glaze Unit, etc!
Included in this download:
1. Paleolithic-Neolithic Pottery handout (.pdf), and worksheet (.docx),
2. Mesopotamia Pottery handout (.pdf), and worksheet (.docx),
3. Native American/Pre-Columbian Pottery handout (.pdf), and worksheet (.docx),
4. Greek Pottery handout (.pdf), and worksheet (.docx),
5. Chinese Pottery handout (.pdf), and worksheet (.docx),
6. Egyptian Pottery handout (.pdf), and worksheet (.docx),
7. Coloring page review (.pdf).
Bonus:
I uploaded the handouts to Google Drive and turned them into “Drag 'N Drops”! If you prefer to use Chromebooks, students can drag the word from the handout on the left side of their screen to the worksheet on the right. Link is included in the download. Just make a “copy” of the files to your Drive, then “share” them with your students!
