Description

This is a Smart Notebook file to practice solving word problems about elapsed time. THE FILE IS IN SPANISH.

The first five slides show starting and ending times on two separate clocks and ask students to find the amount of time that has passed. They use five minute intervals, to make for an easy introduction.

The next five slides show number lines for students to figure out the elapsed time. They also move from using multiples of 5 minutes to using any number of minutes.

The next five slides show starting times on a clock, tell how long an activity lasted, and ask students to provide the ending time.

The last six slides are mixed review of all kinds of time word problems. These six slides are modeled on the types of problems appearing in Crosswalk Coach for the Common Core.

I teach in a bilingual school where my English-speaking students are learning Spanish. In this file, the repeating of the sentence frames allows students to build their language ability while practicing the math skills. Clip art scaffolds their vocabulary.

I print the slides as a handout or as thumbnails and give them to the students as a packet. Over several days or weeks, we work on a few problems per day. You could also use it as a game, or have students solve the problems on mini-whiteboards before holding up their answers. If you have students who can read Spanish independently, they could use the slides printed out as task cards in a math center. Advanced students can create their own series of questions.

This presentation was designed for teachers who speak Spanish and teach math in Spanish, but an ESL teacher who has some Spanish background may find it helpful as well.

Common Core Alignment:
3.MD.1: Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
