What educators are saying

Used this at the beginning of the year so that students can write to themselves. Great resource and outline!
This was a great resource for the first few days of the school year. I love that it was very easy for me to prepare at a time when I was in a time crunch.

Description

Don't end the school year without this writing activity! This end of year writing project will have your students reflect on their lives while working on their letter writing skills. Available as a printable worksheet or digital activity, this end of the year writing project is the perfect activity to have students reflect on their lives and keep as a time capsule or as a final piece for their writing portfolio.

Students will document their lives by writing about

  • Their likes and dislikes
  • What they are proud of
  • Problems and concerns
  • Their favorites
  • Their world
  • Hobbies and activities that they enjoy
  • People in their life
  • Their future

This activity includes:

  • Tips and information to distribute this digital lesson through your learning management system, such as Google Classroom or Schoology.
  • 1 page of letter requirements outlines the information students should include in the letter.
  • A 1-page graphic organizer to help brainstorm, sequence, and guide student writing.
  • 6-page questionnaire - Use this with my students who struggle writing lengthy assignments. The task is broken down into sentence writing rather than paragraph writing.
  • Rubric to assess student work.

This product can be differentiated for the various writers in your classroom. Students are expected to write a 5-paragraph letter using the requirements on the handout. Reminders for friendly letter writing are included. There is a graphic organizer included for students who need additional support. There is also a questionnaire included for those who need help elaborating on their writing.

How to use this activity in your classroom:

  • Final exam or exit ticket
  • Writing portfolio assessment
  • End of year activity
  • Time capsule activity - mail to students at a later date
  • "Getting to know you" activity - Use at the beginning of the year and have students open them in June!
  • Reflection project

Feedback from teachers:

  • My kids loved this. I changed it slightly to make it more meaningful for them, but a great first day activity.
  • I have been doing this for years but never put it in a complete organizer for the students. Thanks for this! You saved me so much time!
  • This was a fabulous end of the year activity for my sixth graders. I can't wait to mail them their letters in 2024!
  • Really liked this for the end of the year activities. It really required a lot of reflection and the variety of activities provided scaffolding for my kiddos.
  • Great resource for my high school special education class! At the end of the year, I used it as a modified approach to a "future self" letter.

This product is available as a print or digital activity. There is also an editable version available (for print ONLY). This allows you to control certain instructions to give you more flexibility. You can use it as a getting to know you activity at the beginning of the year or as an end of year activity as a student reflection piece. You can hand it back at the end of the year or in their senior year of high school, which is what I usually do.
