I love anything that is unconventional, especially visual thinking routines. This is great to appeal to students in a visual and concrete way. Thank you!

Description

Looking for a meaningful end-of-year or end-of-semester activity for middle or high school students? This end of year creative reflection activity is a powerful mapping learning task that highlights collaboration, critical thinking, connections, and synthesis! ALL students need to map their learning at the end of the year. It's an engaging way to make brain-based connections through student-driven review.

WHAT IS YEAR MAPPING?

Year mapping is an activity that requires students to reflect on everything they have learned in your class! Students work with peers or individually to identify big takeaways, key learning points, and make connections between pillars of the class.

As students map connections between learning standards, they solidify their understanding of concepts, see how all parts of the course are interconnected, and even extend learning to life outside of school.

A year map is like a giant one pager, but because of the emphasis on how learning connects both within the course and to life, it's even better! Students can complete their end of year reflection activity on one page, a mural, Slides, or any other medium they desire.

Due to the open-ended nature of this end of year activity, there are a plethora of access points for students of all readiness levels. Efficient and practical differentiation!

The best part? YOU, the teacher, are free to confer with students, coach them through their review session, and fill in learning gaps where necessary.

Yes, this resource is editable in Google Slides™.

WILL IT WORK FOR OTHER SUBJECTS?
Yes, this resource would work for any subject. However, the examples and directions included are geared toward English Language Arts. The digital version of the resource is editable, so you can edit it to fit your content area.

WILL IT WORK FOR ANY AGE?

The overall concept of year mapping will work for any age. However, if you choose to use this particular end of year activity with students younger than middle school, you will need to modify the directions, content suggestions, and organizers to be at their level. You'll also want to think through which standards or categories you want students to reflect upon. With all age groups, students would benefit from modeling, but especially with younger students.

This particular resource was created for middle and high school students.

WHEN SHOULD I USE IT?

Year mapping is the perfect end of the year activity for reflection and review! Whether you give some sort of final exam or not, all students would benefit from this student-led review activity toward the end of your course.

Students can complete this activity in any amount of time, but the less time they have, the more rushed and simple the connections will be. For maximum benefit, I recommend an average of three forty-five minute class periods for students to collaboratively work on their maps.

When students map their learning, everyone wins. Collaboration, critical thinking, and brain-based learning take center stage with this end of year activity. End the school year meaningfully with learning maps!

STUDENT TESTIMONIAL:

"It was a great way to mentally assess the year. It not only helped me reflect on my own performance as a student but also helped me review the different topics that we studied throughout the year. When I was creating my map, I was unintentionally giving myself a brief refresher course that I will remember long after the individual lessons are forgotten. It was helpful to recap my ninth grade learning before moving on to tenth grade. I know I will need these skills! This was a fresh way to remember the year and connect all of the dots in ways that I wouldn’t have noticed before."

- Elise, Freshman
