What educators are saying

This is perfect for a procedural writing unit! It is very helpful that the sheets are step-by-step so that students are able to easier plan their writing.
WOW! I love how this isnt just "make a pizza". There are a ton of activities prior to doing the actual writing that make connections to the real world. Merci!

Description

This resource includes a recipe writing unit that is perfect for teaching procedural writing in French. The unit also integrates comparing and adding money amounts, setting and tracking a budget and representing money amounts. It also includes writing templates, recipe examples, reading food labels, vocabulary list of relevant words and a rubric. I used this unit when I planned a field trip to a local grocery store. Our class walked to the nearest grocery store and spent an hour looking at various food labels, sale prices, and looking for food items for their recipes. They were able to walk around the grocery store and write down the prices of all the items they would need if they did make the recipe. This field trip is obviously optional but a great way to integrate real world situations in the classroom. Also, it's a FREE trip!

Students are asked to find or create a recipe. They will then write a list of grocery items that they require to make their recipe. Using grocery store flyers or online flyers, students will compare the prices of various food items. They will then calculate how much money they need to spend to make their recipe (preparing the recipe is optional...for most students this is all just pretend but using real food items and prices). They will then track how much money they spent using a kid friendly budget spreadsheet and complete a reflection sheet.

The second part of the unit includes the recipe writing portion. Students will have access to a few different recipe writing templates and a few examples. They will also be provided with a list of transition words, cooking verbs and cooking materials and utensils.
