Learning Objective
Students will construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy. Students will also learn why certain leaves turn colors in the fall.
Description
This is a great fall science activity. This fall experiment will explore why Leaves change color in the fall. Hint: It has to do with photosynthesis! The hands-on lab will demonstrate that green deciduous leaves have other pigments hidden within. Following the simple directions, students will see the other colors within a leaf appear. This is a really fun and easy experiment to do with simple household materials. The results are dramatic and exciting. ♻️
ALSO INCLUDED:
This resource also has a CLOSE Reading Activity for 5th or 6th Grade that is aligned with CCSS for reading informational text for 6th Grade. It includes a scientific nonfiction passage (3 pages) explaining why and how autumn leaves of deciduous trees change colors. Students will write a Claim Evidence Reasoning paragraph to answer the question, Why do leaves change color in the fall?
This resource includes interactive notebook flaps and folds and response pages with text-dependent questions.
This Fall Leaf Resource includes:
- informational text passages
- slide show
- response pages
- interactive notebook flaps
- hands-on lab
- CER writing Activity
This resource is full of lots of activities to help your students dive into this scientific text and learn about the processes happening within the leaves. CLOSE Reading Why Do leaves Change Color In the Fall
