Fractions with Food: An Introduction to Fractions
What educators are saying
Description
Begin your unit with bold, kid friendly, food-themed vocabulary posters to introduce important fraction words. Students will create "mini menu" booklets to illustrate learning of their new fraction words.
In addition to vocabulary, students will have many opportunities to practice and apply their learning of halves, thirds, fourths, as well as the concept of equal and unequal; and partitioning shapes into equal pieces.
This packet includes a lift the flap fraction booklet and a mini fraction craft project--both of which are great for math board/hallway displays. I have also included a bonus "Build a Pizza" game--which is perfect for fraction practice at math stations.
Your students will enjoy learning beginning fractions concepts with all of the meaningful activities included in this mini unit!
CCSS math standards covered in this unit (grades 1 and 2):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.3
Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.3
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
