French Baseline Assessment Evaluation Sheets - Grade 1 by Kickstart Classroom

While running records are a fantastic way to offer insight into patterns in reading behaviours, more basic assessment of language/math in French Immersion is not always provided across school boards. For some school boards, French reading assessment only begins at the end of Grade 1! Now there is a comprehensive way to make sure your students are on track with their basic sounds, sight words, writing, and number identification.

This resource is designed to be used for ongoing assessment, and as a diagnostic tool. Reassess at three points in the school year to evaluate progress, inform future teaching, pinpoint a particular student’s difficulties/gaps in knowledge, help with formal assessments (report cards), and for evidence during parent interviews.
Sit down with each student for private conferencing and work through each section. There are two versions to choose from. To limit visual distractions, use the second version and cover parts of the paper that are not being used with a neutral coloured paper.

The reading section tests for mastery of uppercase and lowercase letter names and sound, if the student can read consonant-vowel blends, combination sounds, and Grade 1 sight words.

The writing section allows you to check on the development of handwriting, spelling, uppercase and lowercase letters, and punctuation. As students write, check for proper pencil grasp and note if they are right- handed or left-handed on the teacher sheet.

The math section assesses if students can identify numbers to 100. Students will also show that they can recognize and write dictated numbers without reversals.

Also included is a two-page explanation of how to assess using this resource, a teacher sheet as well as space for conferencing notes.
