Description

Fun Science Experiments // Mentos and Coke / Soda Experiment

Includes BOTH US size and Australian A4 sized files/spelling!

This fun experiment explores the physical reaction between mentos and diet coke / diet soda creating an impressive geyser of carbon dioxide. It is an excellent way for children to ‘see’ gas in action and is a great activity to teach children about states of matter and physical/chemical reactions.

The activities and resources in this pack are designed to develop a love of science through fun hands on investigations. The activities and printables included are aimed at early childhood children. Different versions are included to cater for a range of developmental abilities and year levels catering from Kindergarten to second grade.

Included in this pack you will find:

  • The science behind Mentos and Soda poster/display chart (great visual if enlarged to A3).

  • Mentos and candy experiment – this experiment investigates the reaction of three different types of candies/lollies (Mentos, marshmallows and jelly beans) and helps children to identify elements of a fair test in a scientific investigation. Other ideas for variations of the experiment are included.

  • Mentos and candy fair test printable (identifying elements of a fair test – change, measure, same).

  • Mentos experiment prediction and observation recording sheet (basic template for younger children).

  • Mentos Experiment recording sheet/printable allowing children to follow scientific method to conduct the experiment (with hypothesis, observations and conclusion).

  • Mentos and Coke / Soda Experiment science journal title – print these science journal tiles onto coloured paper and use as a science journal writing prompt). This allows for an open ended activity – children could either draw a picture of what happened with the Mentos and coke / soda / soft drink, they could write about their opinion about the experiment, they could reflect on their learning or they could write the actual produce for the experiment under the heading).

  • Coke / Soda Bottle templates: These are a fun and cute way for younger children to record their observations. Print bottle onto card and cut out, then have children draw or paint what they observed happening. Add small white circle stickers to represent the Mentos.

For Australian teachers, this pack aligns well with both the Science Inquiry Skills and the Chemical Science Understanding strands of the Australian Curriculum.

For American Schools, this simple and fun experiment is great to do during summer school or for some end of year fun!

I hope you find these resources useful in your classroom.
