What educators are saying

Kids really got into the analysis of the Mongols especially since we have mentioned them a few times during the school year already. Finally gave students a better understanding of the impact the Mongols and their empire/culture had on others around the world!

Description

This lesson always turns the classroom excitement level way up! Students will hear stories of Mongol warriors drinking horse blood on the run and catapulting Black Death carcasses in siege warfare, as well as learn about the Mongol Empire's policies of religious tolerance and egalitarian meritocracy. How did Genghis Khan manage to establish the largest land-based contiguous empire in the world's history? What was it about the Mongols' geography, way of life, military tactics, and ruling styles that made this achievement possible?

In this inquiry-based lesson, students analyze maps, images, and primary and secondary sources to find answers to these questions. A a guided notes worksheet on John Green's extremely popular Crash Course World History "Mongols" episode is included, which can be used in class or assigned as homework. The complete lesson provides many writing and discussion opportunities, with the detailed five page teacher answer key and guide giving supplementary material, stories, and analysis questions. See the Preview for excerpts.
