Description
This Doodle and Do resource is designed to help students learn about growth mindset. First, students will read a nonfiction passage about growth mindset (created in a doodle-style). While reading the doodle article, they’ll answer questions and sketch doodles to show their understanding of the text (directly in the passage). Then, they’ll creatively respond to the text and showcase their learning on a Doodle Notes page. After they learn about growth mindset, they can “do” 4 fun activities to help them develop a growth mindset.
The activities can be taught sequentially or at different times in the school year. They include making writing prompt pockets and responding to growth mindset prompts, analyzing a growth mindset poem with an interactive flip book, creating a lock and key reflection, and participating in growth mindset discussions with task cards.
This set of learning activities is not only effective in helping students understand and develop a growth mindset, it’s also super engaging and fun!
While completing the fun growth mindset activities, students will…

• Practice writing skills while responding to various prompts
• Develop poetry analysis skills while studying rhyme, figurative language, and purpose

About the Doodle Article:
• Students will read and learn about Dr. Dweck’s work with Growth Mindset.
• They’ll read a nonfiction passage that includes information about growth mindset, fixed mindset, grit, ways to develop a growth mindset and mindset swaps.
• Then, they’ll respond to targeted questions directly in the text. They’ll add doodles and responses to showcase their learning. (This makes reading interactive and engaging!)
About the Doodle Notes:
• After reading the article, students will color, doodle, and/or embellish a note page that aligns with the article.
• Doodle notes cause a connection between the right and left hemisphere of the brain. This leads to an increase in learning, focus, and retention.
• The doodles on the note page help students to connect images with information and significantly increases their ability to remember what they have learned.
About the “Do” Activities:
• This resource includes 4 additional fun activities to help students develop a growth mindset.
• These activities can be taught in any order. You might teach them all at once as part of a growth mindset unit, or you might teach them throughout the year to reinforce the concepts.
--- Writing Prompt Pockets
• Students will be creating writing prompt pockets. There are five different versions of the pockets.
• Each pocket includes a quote that is relevant to growth mindset, a writing prompt that relates to the quote, and paper for students to respond to the prompt.
• You can use these prompts in a variety of ways: assign them as morning work or bellringers, have students create them many days in a row or at different times throughout the year, add them to interactive notebooks, display them on a classroom clothesline or bulletin board, and on and on!
--- Growth Mindset Poem Analysis and Flip Book
• Students will be reading the poem “The Man Who Thinks He Can” by Walter D. Wintle.
• The author’s message in this poem is that one’s mindset has far more to do with one’s success than anything else.
• As students read the poem, their analysis of the poem will develop. They’ll record their analysis in an interactive flip book.
--- Growth Mindset Reflection
• Students will be reflecting on a current challenge that they are facing.
• Then, they’ll share the growth mindset or mindset shift that they can use to overcome or “unlock” the challenge.
• Students will write about the challenge on a lock and key shape.
• Finally, they’ll color and cut out the shapes as a visual representation of their growth mindset reflection.
• The finished product lends itself to a bulletin board display. Or, if students use interactive notebooks, the lock and key can be glued inside students’ notebooks.
--- Growth Mindset Group Discussions
• This activity will have students thinking deeply about group mindset and learning from one another.
• During this activity students will work in small groups. While in their groups, they’ll take turns reading discussion questions for the group to talk about.
• There’s a set of 6 thought-provoking discussion task cards in this activity.
• There’s also a “Group Discussion Highlights” tracking sheet. Students will record key points from their discussion on this paper. This not only helps students to be more accountable during the discussions, it also provides them with a tangible representation of their learning.
