Description
This is a fun way to teach a traditionally very difficult subject for students to understand. Chemical structures, monomers, and polymers are so abstract! My students love my carbohydrate, protein, and lipid structures activities. Performing the tasks in these activities really helps them to understand the concepts needed for the basic biochemistry taught in high school biology courses.
Before performing these activities, students should have a basic background in chemistry. Single bonds, simple molecular structure recognition, and an understanding of dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis reactions are necessary to complete the activity.
In this nucleic acids activity, you will need colored red/green/blue/white/yellow paper clips, red/blue beads, and white pipe cleaners. The beads and pipe cleaners can be bought with a couple of dollars at Walmart or Michaels and I got 1000 colored paper clips at Staples for around $7.99. It does require a little money to get started, but you will have this activity for years and you will see a dramatic improvement in the understanding your students will gain for this unit!
