What educators are saying

This collaborative coloring is amazing! The students were highly engaged and loved being able to create a big piece of art together. Such a great way to build community in the classroom!
One of the best things I've ever done for Black History month. Without a doubt, such an engaging and rewarding activity for students to learn about Harriet Tubman.

Description

Harriet Tubman Collaboration Portrait Poster. Designed to complement or supplement any Harriet Tubman lesson, Women’s History Unit, or any Black History Month studies. Also great for Harriet Tubman Day.

This poster is the perfect anticipatory set to pique your students’ interest or a great extension to finish your studies with a WOW. Your students will be talking about this poster for weeks to come and will always remember exactly which piece was “theirs” when they see it on display!

Included in this Resource

Poster #1: Coloring Collaboration Poster

*****GREAT FOR ANY AGE*****

This lesson is very easy for teachers (low prep) but so much fun for kids! Each student is given one page/piece of a large mosaic collaboration poster to color according to the instructions on the page. Once all sheets are colored and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large multi-colored mosaic/poster/mural of Harriet Tubman in various colors.

Poster Details

• 30 pages

• 5 x 6 grid

• Final poster: Approx. 35 in. x 42 in. (depending on your printer settings).

• Colors needed in crayons, colored pencils, or markers – red, green, blue, and purple.

Some teachers like to show their students what they will be making (that is why I have included a final example), and others like to keep it a secret until the end for a really fun surprise!

Poster #2: Drawing Collaboration Poster

***** Ideal for middle school and high school students *****

This lesson is not hard but is more challenging than the coloring version in poster #1. In this lesson, each student will draw their own grid piece using a small version of their assigned gridcell as a reference. Once the pieces are drawn and cut out, the classroom poster can be assembled. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual gridcells to line up well and produce a nice looking final poster of Harriet Tubman. This is all about working together!

Poster Details

• 30 pages

• 5 x 6 grid

• Final poster: Approx. 35 in. x 42 in. (depending on your printer settings).

• Drawing pencils needed

• Colors needed in crayons, colored pencils, or markers – red, green, blue, and purple.

BONUS Activities

I have created a variety of handouts that individual students can work on when they are finished with their poster piece. The handouts are for a variety of levels, so you can find one that fits your grade level. Included are:

• Unscramble the portrait drawing

• Unscramble the portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations)

• Harriet Tubman coloring page.

If you like this Harriet Tubman collaboration poster, I also have a large collection of other posters appropriate for Black History or Women's History studies, including:

I hope your students enjoy this Harriet Tubman collaboration poster and, no doubt, all the meaningful conversations that will come from it.

Thank you for supporting my work and infusing your classroom with art!
