What educators are saying

My students enjoyed using this activity as morning work. It was a great way to review Sequoyah because there are not many reading passages about him.

Description

Today a statue of this Native American hero stands in the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The grand Sequoia trees and Sequoia National Park in California were named after him. The celebrated American I am talking about is Sequoyah. My minilesson about him is entitled " Sequoyah: The Great Cherokee Communicator." The biographical text is nearly 3 pages long and comes with a drawing of Sequoyah. Then there are 10 multiple choice reading comprehension and vocabulary questions. Eight of the questions test the reading skills of drawing conclusions, making inferences, identifying author's purpose, character traits, locating details, and cause-effect relationships. Two of the ten questions deal with vocabulary. All ten questions are formated in a way that mirror the kinds of questions on Common Core and other standardized assessments. It is an interesting, informative lesson about a heroic Native American, which can serve as a helpful test preparation. The last page is the answer key. The product is on a word document that you can easily edit if you find necessary.
