    Description

This gallery walk duo is designed to help students learn to identify different types of figurative language in context!

Set 1 Figurative Language – This set of cards focuses on basic sentences that give a very obvious use of the following literary / sound devices:

    • Alliteration
    • Hyperbole
    • Idioms
    • Metaphors
    • Onomatopoeia
    • Personification
    • Similes

Students read the sentence and identify the type of figurative language that is used in the sentence.

Set 2 Figurative Language in Context –  This set of cards focuses on the same types of devices as the first set but at the paragraph level.

Students are provided a short snippet from actual children’s literature, and they need to determine what type of figurative language is being used.

***DIFFERENTIATED SECOND DECK ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS SET: If you feel like your students need a little more support to locate the figurative language, a second deck of the SAME cards is included that has key words written in red.  (I actually use this deck as a type of “slideshow” when we check response sheets together as a class. Students are able to actually “see” the portion of the text they need to focus on to determine the type of device used.)

    What’s included in each deck?

    • 30 full-page task cards
    • Student response sheet
    • Figurative language reference sheet (I usually print this on the back of the response sheet for easy reference)
    • Answer key

Gallery walks are a great activity to use for review because kids are still working on academics as they’re having fun! They also provide teachers the opportunity to work with struggling students while others aren’t close enough to overhear. (I have far more students ask me questions during gallery walks than I do in a regular classroom setting!) If you’ve never tried a gallery walk before, you and your students are in for a treat!
