Description
In this online investigation, students use Desmos.com as a substitute for the traditional graphing calculator to investigate properties of inverse functions. This is a great introductory activity into inverse functions as it gives students a visual understanding of what a function and its inverse can look like. In the activity, students are instructed to create a table of values for a function, create the table of values for the inverse function, and graph the line y=x. In so doing, students are able to see that functions and their inverses are essentially a reflection of each other.
Extension activities and examples are also provided for additional reference.
My students really enjoyed taking something as mundane as graphing, tables, and equations and using the website to see how far creativity could take them.
Desmos.com is best to use with Google Chrome or Firefox.
