What educators are saying

This resource hit a number of ELA and science standards so that I could address several targets. Great information.
Just what I was looking for to teach layers of the earth. :) I loved that it went into details like the composition of each layer.

Learning Objective

Students will construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales and describe the cycling of Earth's materials.

Description

Do you want to teach about Earth's Layers?

Students will read rich scientific passages on the properties of the Layers of the Earth and participate in hands-on activities to learn about the composition of the Earth’s layers and how they affect changes on the Earth’s surface. This resource is aligned with the NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas: Earth Materials and Systems and The Role of Water in Earth's Surface Processes.

This resource includes:

  • four pages of informational text articles on layers of the Earth
  • Response pages
  • interactive notebook flaps
  • hands-on science activities, including a lab on convection currents
  • lab pages
  • QR code research
  • worksheets
  • writing activity
  • answer keys

Teachers Love this Integrated Science Unit!❤️❤️❤️

Jennifer ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

Outstanding resource! Aligns well with standards. Great labs and follow-up pages. Great slide show. Altogether a really great unit that is easy to implement. Students love this!

Joan ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

My students enjoyed this and myself teaching the 6th grade for the very first time. Excellent resource. This helped so much when I assigned them to make a model of the Earth. Great product.

Students will develop a model to explain the cycling of materials and construct an explanation based on evidence to show how geoscience processes have changed the Earth's surface.

This resource is designed to meet the standard for NGSS Earths Systems:

MS-ESS2-1

Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth's materials and the flow of energy that drives this process.

MS-ESS2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales.

And

Utah SEEd standards for 7th Grade Earth Science:

Utah SEEd Standard 7.2.2 Construct an explanation based on evidence for how processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales. Examples of processes that occur at varying time scales could include slow plate motions or rapid landslides. Examples of processes that occur at varying spatial scales could include uplift of a mountain range or deposition of fine sediments.

Utah SEEd Standard 7.2.4 Develop and use a scale model of the matter in the Earth’s interior to demonstrate how differences in density and chemical composition (silicon, oxygen, iron, and magnesium) cause the formation of the crust, mantle, and core

The following science concepts are addressed in this unit:

Layers of the Earth

Crust

Mantle

Outer core

Inner core

Lithosphere

Asthenosphere

Properties and thickness of each layer

Convection Currents

Plate Tectonics

Making a Model

How Scientists know about the layers

NGSSMS-ESS2-2
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales. Emphasis is on how processes change Earth’s surface at time and spatial scales that can be large (such as slow plate motions or the uplift of large mountain ranges) or small (such as rapid landslides or microscopic geochemical reactions), and how many geoscience processes (such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and meteor impacts) usually behave gradually but are punctuated by catastrophic events. Examples of geoscience processes include surface weathering and deposition by the movements of water, ice, and wind. Emphasis is on geoscience processes that shape local geographic features, where appropriate.
