If the thought of using literature circles has ever made you weep, tear out your hair, question your existence, or binge-watch cat videos—because it’s just that frustrating and overwhelming—I made this resource for you.
If your students dread reading and analyzing literature more than mystery meatloaf in the school cafeteria...I made this resource for them, too.
I promise you: if any of that sounds like you or your students, you are NOT alone.
Many teachers like you have told me that literature circles are too overwhelming or too hard to introduce and implement. But you’re still expected to do close reading with students and prepare them to do independent analysis! How are you supposed to do it?
Enter: Literature Circles. This BUNDLE is your complete kit for instructing students in conducting literature circles for ANY short story or novel!
Literature Circles are a fun and engaging way for students to take ownership of their learning. Literature Circles encourage students to have rich conversation surrounding text. This is a great unit for reading instruction at the middle school level because you can use it several times throughout the year with chapter book sets that are available at your school based on units and themes that you already use.
This product contains everything you need to teach Literature Circles:
• Eight attractive task cards that list the Common Core Standards addressed, provide an overview of the Literature Circle job, and explain the expectations for individual presentations during a literature circle
• An overview handout listing the eight different Literature Circle jobs, the Depth of Knowledge terms associated with each job, and the Common Core Standard addressed in each job
• Eight separate job sheets for students to use while preparing for Literature Circles using evidence from the text. The job sheets cover the roles of: Question Commander, Line Illuminator, Summary Sultan, Character Commentator, Illustrious Artist, Word Warlock, Uncanny Connector, and The Detective
• Rubric for teachers or students to use while observing and evaluating Literature Circles
• A printable for a bookmark that lists all eight jobs and offers a brief description of each job
• A recording sheet and calendar that easily allow students to keep track of the jobs they have completed and their reading schedule
This unit is intended for use with upper elementary and secondary students and might be too demanding for lower elementary.
