About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities

SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:

Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency

Narrative Station to build science literacy

Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding

Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design

Synthesis Station and Project to inspire higher-order learning

Important Notes:

• Download the FREE SNAPs Setup Guide for best practices, signage and editable rubrics

• Download a FREE SNAPs Lab Stations Activity to learn more about my SNAPs labs

• Save $$ with the NGSS Science Lab Stations Bundle ($500 for 200+ labs)

• Save $$$ with the Earth Science Complete Curriculum

• Save $$$$ with the Integrated Science Complete Curriculum

The activities at each station in this lab are detailed below.

The Rock Cycle Lab Learning Objectives

1. Compare and contrast sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks.

2. Discuss the processes that form and break down sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock.

3. Explain how energy from the Earth’s hot interior and natural processes drives the rock cycle.

4. Develop a model that describes the rock cycle.

Science Skills Station

Students will use a dichotomous key to classify rocks. Based on the classification, students will compare and contrast the three major types of rocks. They will also create an illustration that summarizes the processes of the rock cycle that transform one type of rock into another.

Narrative Station

Students will read a text about the three major types of rocks. They will also read about the processes that form and transform one type of rock into another type of rock as part of the rock cycle.

Assessment Station

At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to the rock cycle. Students must employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station

Students will develop a model of the rock cycle using Starburst candies. Students will model the processes of the rock cycle and describe how rocks transform between sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock.

Synthesis Station

Students will compose a CER (claim-evidence-reasoning) report to summarize the lab. Students are provided the claim statement and must support the claim with observations, data and other information gathered in the lab. Students will explain how the evidence supports the claim using scientific reasoning.

Synthesis Project

Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

This download includes:

• A pre-lab assignment and post-lab reflection

• Directions and questions for each lab station

• Student recording sheets

• Teacher Key

Additional Materials Required:

Ruler

Colored Pencils

3 Starburst candies (per group)

Aluminum foil (6 in x 6 in per group)

Hot plate

5-10 pound weight or object

Ziploc sandwich bag (per group)

Stopwatch

Heat-safe gloves or tongs

Colored pencils

Large bowl with ice (optional)

NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS

This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-ESS2-1. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - to meet the standard. This lab also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

NGSSMS-ESS2-1
Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process. Emphasis is on the processes of melting, crystallization, weathering, deformation, and sedimentation, which act together to form minerals and rocks through the cycling of Earth’s materials. Assessment does not include the identification and naming of minerals.
