Learning Objective
Students will match three supporting details to each main idea statement.
Description
Keep your kids engaged as they learn how details support the main idea with this main idea craftivity. Your students will match three detail sentences to each main idea sentence. The finished products can be used to make a creative bulletin board or school hallway display!
All of the MAIN IDEA CONES are related to ice cream topics. These are the main ideas:
⭐️ Three ice cream flavors are clearly America's favorites.
⭐️ The amount of milkfat determines how ice cream is labeled.
⭐️ Ice cream can cause a sensation known as "brain freeze".
⭐️ There are some unusual flavors of ice cream.
⭐️ Citizens of America love their ice cream!
⭐️ You can eat ice cream in various ways.
Each main idea sentence has three supporting detail SCOOPS of ice cream that the students must find and stack on their cone.
Procedure:
- Students color and cut out the cones and scoops of ice cream.
- Students read the main idea sentence on each cone and determine which supporting detail sentences (on scoops of ice cream) align with it.
- Once all of the ice cream pieces have been sorted into their respective groups, students form ice cream cones and glue them onto a sheet of construction paper.
Supporting Materials:
- Student-friendly directions that can be projected for students to refer to throughout the work time!
- Answer key
- A matching interactive notebook entry is included in this product. Two ice cream cones can be glued into students' reading notebooks for future student reference.
Here's what other teachers have said about using this activity with students:

- Melanie said, "This was a huge hit with my 4th graders! I even got an e-mail from one of my parents that said "Whatever the ice cream main idea thing you did was, J loved it. He chatted about it in the car all the way home!"."
- Emily B. said, "I used this resource for my summer school group and it was amazing! They were a group that struggled to get main idea all year and this product perfectly reinforced the skill and helped them become more confident with it."
- Ally E. said, "My students LOVED this! They loved talking about the different facts of ice cream and which detail matches with which main idea (we called it central idea). I will for sure use this again next year!"
Note... many teachers report having their students complete this as a group activity! For example, Marion K. said, "This was a great group activity. My students love hands-on and using it in a group meant they had to agree before gluing things down!"
