What educators are saying

My 5th graders loved making these spooky and Halloween themed for their final projects...cool little project

Description

Drawing Castles and Geometry combine to make for a lot of creative fun for Middle School art and High School art students!

  • This line-pattern drawing lesson has been student-tested with 8th graders. They loved it! ❤️
  • Students were interested and engaged in this seasonal lesson and pleased with their end results.
  • This content-rich lesson ties in some basic geometry and house and castle architecture.
  • History that relates to castles or western ghost towns also could be added in if desired!
  • This lesson provides a lot of opportunities for students to practice color mixing with complementary colors to dull (neutralize) their colors to create a "mood". A great opportunity to teach students how to reduce a color's intensity with paint or watercolor pencils! The students used a variety of media to finish their drawings.
  • All students started with a pencil drawing but then were given two options to finish their drawing: As a watercolor pencil drawing with neutralized colors to create a spooky mood or a graphite pencil value drawing. Both mediums were successful and easy for students to control with satisfying results.
  • This lesson focuses on variety, line patterns, overlapping, value, and optional triadic color scheme.
  • Students applied prior knowledge of one-point perspective, foreground, middle ground, and background on many of the designs.
  • This lesson provides a lot of opportunities for students to practice color mixing with complementary colors to dull (neutralize) their colors to create a "mood".
  • You can make this lesson as simple or content-rich as your time permits. If you just want to do the lesson as a line or pattern drawing it will take about 6 days. Adding color or shading with value will add another 5 days.

This 26-slide PDF Resource includes:

-A 5-page lesson plan with student examples.

-Slides are provided to take students through each step that goes along with a script written into the lesson plan.

-5 visual resource handouts are provided with many windows, doors, siding, roof patterns, and other details to be used for inspiration.

- 2-page summarized Handout that reviews the lesson is included, which is really helpful to give to a Substitute teacher or students that were absent for the instructions.

-2 Handouts about architectural home styles and famous castles

-a tested grading rubric

-BONUS! A useful and relevant sketchbook activity to help students practice dulling colors by using complementary colors and also gray, to make tones and black, to make shades.

Start this at the beginning of October to have time to grade this project for students to take home if they celebrate Halloween!

TIP: A variation for students that don't celebrate Halloween could be a village of gnomes or knights and dragons instead. I can offer one resource to help with this variation! "Hidden Gnomes Resource".
