What educators are saying

This activity really helped my students distinguish between mixtures and solutions while having fun at the same time! Thanks so much!
This was so fun! My students enjoyed the investigation and connecting snacks to chemical/physical changes!

Description

Students will create their own trail mix and kool-aid to demonstrate the difference between mixtures and special types of mixtures called solutions. I teach in a special-ed classroom and utilizing their measuring skills, and involving their taste buds make it easier for them to make a connection to the content.

You will need (per student, makes 1 cup. They could split with a partner or take home.)
¼ cup goldfish
¼ cup pretzels
¼ cup dried cranberries
¼ cup cereal
individual kool-aid packets
Measuring cups (1/4 cup)
water
bowls
cups
something for each student to mix with
ziplock bags to take mixture home

This is a 4 page lab:
Page 1: Students make trail mix, describe physical characteristics of trail mix, identify it as a physical or chemical change, and a mixture or solution.
Page 2: Students dump kool-aid into water and mix it well. They describe the physical characteristics of the kool-aid, identify it as a chemical or physical change, identify if it's a mixture or solution, then list examples of chemical and physical changes.
Page 3: Students define solute, solution, and solvent. Students identify the parts of this project that were solvent, solution, and solute.
Page 4: They then list as many examples of mixtures and solutions as they can.
