Mnemonic Alphabet

What educators are saying
Description
Teaching letter sounds? Use visual phonics supports! Research shows that using embedded mnemonic alphabet letters helps children learn letter sounds more quickly and better commits them to memory.
❉ What are embedded mnemonic letters? ❉
Research has proven that embedded picture alphabets are more effective than letters with an accompanying stand-alone image.
Each letter has been matched carefully with a picture support that forms the shape of the letter, in order to provide a visual-phonological memory anchor for those struggling to retain the letter sounds.
Add sandpaper, glitter, pipe cleaners, etc. to the poster for tactile tracing. These posters/flashcards may be beneficial to use in conjunction with a multi-sensory approach to reading and writing, such as Orton-Gillingham. You may want to add a kinesthetic approach to learning the letters as well. For example, for letter "A," students may perform the action of "picking an apple," or "jumping the waves" letter "W."

❉ Who Would Benefit From This Resource? ❉
This resource would be especially useful for pre-schoolers, kindergarteners, or first graders initially learning alphabet sounds and letter formation, as well as special education-dyslexia, or basic skills students that require specialized reading support. This might be a wonderful resource to include in your RTI or for small group reading intervention activities. I have used these letter cards with all of my first graders that require a letter formation rhyme or alphabet poem in order to help them retain alphabet sounds and form letters accurately.
