This is a great resource with many activities. I like how it is aligned with the BC curriculum. It is a great unit for anyone exploring communities.
This resource gave me a really great starting point when teaching 1st grade social studies for the first time.

UPDATED!! 07/19/16 Ever wonder how to teach using the inquiry method? I developed this packet based on of the new B.C. Curriculum. My goal was to do as many inquiry based lessons as I could. I have tested these lessons and I found it challenging for my students but very engaging! Please redownload if you have already purchased!!! Includes student self-assessments.
Term 1
I can identify key events and developments in the local community (community milestones - found of the community, the opening and closing of local businesses, the construction of new buildings, celebrations and holidays, cultural events, and the growth or decline of a community).
I can help place these events in order on our class timeline.
I can explain the importance of these events in our local community.
I can recognize if characteristics of the local community have changed or stayed the same.
Lesson 1: What is a community? Includes anchor chart.

Term 2
I can identify characteristics of the local community that provide organization and meet the needs of the community (local government, public utilities.emergency services, policing, transportation, stores, parks and recreation, financial services).
Lesson 1-4: Community Worker Inquiry
Includes needs anchor chart.
Term 3
I can identify key characteristics that differentiate between the urban and the rural environment.
I can gather, interpret, and analyze information on a chosen natural or human-made feature of the local environment (building, bridge, mountain, lake, forests, rivers, local plants, animals, house, church dams, dikes).
I can explain why my chosen feature is important to the community or how it affects and/or is connected to the community (natural resource industries, parks another natural areas, population growth and new construction, water and sewage treatment).
