Description
Native American regions are diverse and each region should be taught separately.
My Native American regional units are focused on pre-contact cultures but the descendants of many of the tribes we study continue to practice their cultural traditions today.
Structure of the mini-units:
Teacher Notes
Regional Maps
Brief informational passages with comprehension-building cloze passages
Gallery Walk: A low-prep primary source activity. Simply print one copy of each of the six primary source pages and make a copy of the recording sheet for each group. These photos were taken many years after contact but we can still get a good idea of Native American life in each region by examining them.
Project Choice Board: I require my students to complete two of the projects listed on the choice board. Completing these projects helps my students to dive deeper into the information presented to them while using their critical thinking skills. I don’t use rubrics with these projects because there are eight different project choices. That would be a grading nightmare. Instead, I grade the projects holistically, looking for accuracy, effort, and creativity.
Quiz: I use the quiz as a final assessment for the mini-unit. The quiz is fill-in-the-blank with an answer bank.
