Description

The lesson plan for Grades 1-8 includes a PowerPoint with examples of Navajo Rugs and a brief history of Navajo weaving. The lesson is based on National Core Art Standards essential for all grade levels. It also includes math standards for each grade level and a reference to Navajo math skills used in weaving. Audio literature for younger students is another resource for introducing the art of weaving Navajo style. Students are guided to create a design for a Navajo style rug that includes both vertical and horizontal symmetry through the use of a grid with x and y axes. Students can create a scale model with construction paper by enlarging a scale drawing of their design (simple enough for first graders). An assessment based on the objectives is also included.
