What educators are saying

I used this in summer school with my 2nd graders. They had so much fun and it was a great way to review several different skills and have them work cooperatively together. Thank you.

Learning Objective

Students will learn about the ocean habitat and the diversity of animals that live there by solving ELA focused challenges.

Description

Have some fun at the end of the year or the end of your ocean unit with these four low tech challenges. Play the video and complete the challenges as part of a room transformation, escape room, or theme day. The tasks teach about the habitat and the diversity of animals who live in the ocean. My video on YouTube will guide your class through the activities and add more educational details. You just read the introduction and hit play on the video. Your students will love viewing real photos and learning about many of the animals which live in an ocean habitat .

Please Check Before you Purchase

  • Ensure that you can access a YouTube video at your school (some schools block access).

Four challenges present information about the animals in this habitat. As your students complete the challenges they earn postcards (real photographs) from PaPa. Enjoy watching your students work together in teams as they solve the challenges.

Use as an Escape Room:

Groups of students will work together to complete each challenge. The directions you read will have each team bring their completed "answer" to you or the designated student who will be in charge of the evidence folders that contain the answer keys. When one challenge is complete, they can then watch more of the video and move on to the next challenge. The final challenge provides a number code. If you want to have a box or cabinet be "locked", that will add more fun - but it is optional. You could even provide a reward or treat inside. That is up to you.

Use as a Room Transformation:

If a room transformation is how you want to present this, then you should have your students complete challenge #1 on the day before. Adjectives are unscrambled to then be used to determine the habitat. Knowing that they will solve more challenges about the ocean will build excitement for the next day.

Then transform the room into an ocean for when they arrive the next day to step up the experience even more. Think blue tablecloths on the walls. Perhaps tan/brown "sand" tablecloths on the tables/groups of desks. Or just push back all of the desks and have them work on the ocean floor. Hang blue streamer strips in the doorway for them to part to dive into the habitat. Find whale songs or underwater sounds to play as they enter. Turn the lights down too or cover the windows with blue tablecloths to dim the light coming in. All of those suggestions are easy and quick.
Want to take it over the top? You can add bulletin board animal posters if you have them or start drawing. Twist colored paper into long pieces to create a coral reef. Hang circle bubbles from the ceiling. Just imagine the looks on their faces as they walk in.

Access to YouTube is the only digital component of the activity.

Science can be so fun. Get this today and your students will see science in the real world...PaPa's world.

Add more depth to your ocean habitat unit:
