Description

For this activity, students will practice adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing complex numbers. Task Cards #1-16 are adding/subtracting, #17-28 are multiplying and #29-36 are dividing. I sometimes like to do them one set at a time with students so that they first get comfortable with adding/subtracting, then move onto multiplying, then move onto dividing or rationalizing the denominator.

For task cards, I will sometimes do them as a “scoot” activity, posting them on desks and having students move after a certain number of minutes. To differentiate this, I will have some students just do all the odd or even ones, but still move with the rest of the class from seat to seat, just completing every other problem. This differentiates it, but doesn’t isolate them from the activity.

If I don’t have a lot of time, I split up the task cards, giving each person in the group 9 (a combination of every operation, so one person isn’t doing all the add/subtract etc.). This lets them still work in a group, but every student is responsible for their 9 problems. When one person finishes, they can either help their partners or switch with another person in their group that is done and double check their answers.
