Description

This product is intended to be used as a thematic activity centered around the popular spring candy, PEEPS™!  Included are a variety of reading and writing activities perfect for grades 3-8. Teachers could adapt a few activities to use in their classrooms, or feel free to use the sequence guide I use in my own classroom!

What’s Included

  • Sensory Details Brainstorm Chart
  • Figurative Language Brainstorm Page
  • Descriptive Writing Stationary
  • Poetry Type Descriptions
  • Poetry Craft Tracers
  • “The History of Peeps”- Nonfiction Passage
  • Close Reading and Constructed Response Questions
  • Descriptive Paragraph and Poetry Rubrics

Nonfiction Passage: I begin by having students read the Nonfiction passage, “The History of Peeps.”  You could read this as a whole group, with partners, or individually.

Descriptive Writing: Next, I give all my students their very own PEEP and a sensory details/figurative language page.  We brainstorm some sensory details to describe our PEEPS as a class, then I give them some time to work individually.   After completing the sensory details, I have them work on figurative language examples to describe their PEEPS.

Descriptive Paragraph- After brainstorming sensory details and figurative language, we work on writing descriptive paragraphs to describe our PEEP.

PEEPS™ Poetry-This one is one of our FAVORITES! After reviewing elements of poetry and discussing the PEEPS™ Poetry Types Page,  students use their descriptive details and figurative language to craft original PEEPS™ poems.  We take time to look at examples of each type of poetry listed, then I allow them to pick whichever one they want to focus on.  When their poem has been edited and revised, we publish them on either the Chick or Duck. Students decorate their PEEP and I hang them on display in the hallway!
