There are many simple short decodable stories out there in the marketplace and online.  I created these with more of a challenge in mind.  They include high-frequency words, decodable multi-syllable words, and words with consonant blends and digraphs.   Inside the resource, I provide suggestions for free sources for easier decodable texts for students that may need them.

These are the 5 r-controlled sounds focused on in the decodables:

  1. AR like CAR
  2. ER IR UR like BIRD
  3. OR like FORK
  4. EAR like HEAR
  5. AIR like HAIR

These R controlled decodable readers are crafted to provide slightly more advanced decoding practice for readers still developing orthographic mapping and fluency.   The plans for the decodable passages include activities for phoneme-grapheme word work, word dictation, word reading, and sentence reading.   This allows students to build upon their knowledge of the r-controlled vowel sounds and spelling patterns. The readers can develop strong decoding skills at their own pace.  Each story also has comprehension questions following the decodable passage to check for understanding and to promote strategic reading.   Grab these R Controlled Decodable Readers for your students today and watch them transform into confident and fluent readers of words with the r-controlled vowels.

NOTE: These are the same decodable passages included on Day 4 of my phonics units. However, in those units, they are 1 pagers only and do not have the word banks, comprehension questions, or booklet versions.

You and your students will have a fun learning experience with these lessons and activities.
