What educators are saying

This resource was amazing to use. It allowed students to get up and walk around the room and solve problems with ratios, related rates and unit rates. It was challenging enough to make students think! I will definitely use this again.
This resource was a great way for my 6th grade students to review and practice their ratio and rate skills. My students love to work on task cards, and they worked in small groups which made the activity more engaging.

Description

Motivate your students to practice ratio and proportion word problems with this exciting ratios scavenger hunt activity! This 6th Grade Ratio Word Problems Scavenger Hunt includes 36 task cards for practicing real-world ratio word problems. The task cards are divided into three different scavenger hunt activities for beginner, intermediate, and advanced level word problems. The scavenger hunt format of this ratios activity makes solving word problems with ratios fun for even the most reluctant learners.

The ratio task cards are differentiated into three levels (12 cards each) so that each student can work at their appropriate level! The ratio word problems become more challenging as students progress through each level.

To use this ratios activity, place the task cards in secret places around the room. Students will hunt for a task card, solve the ratio word problem on that card, and write the answer on their worksheet. Then, students will look around the room to find that answer written on top of a different card. When they find the card with that answer, they solve the next problem and go searching again. Students love the challenge of finding all of the cards!

Included with this Ratios Word Problems Scavenger Hunt Cards resource:

  • Instructions for use
  • 36 ratios scavenger hunt cards
    • 12 'Level 1' task cards (do not need to simplify the ratio)
    • 12 'Level 2' task cards (must simplify the ratio)
    • 12 'Level 3' cards (must simplify the ratio)
  • Recording sheets
  • Answer keys

Note: In order to save ink, the graphics on these cards are black and white. They look best when printed on colored paper, as shown on the cover image.

Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
