Description

Looking for fun, student-centered activities to help reinforce and practice sentence structure? Try using these resources after your direct instruction. Students will be practicing in partners, small groups, or centers and having a great time talking about grammar!

What's Included?

  1. A Sentence Types Sort. Students work with a partner or small group to sort simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences. With an optional twist, they color code the clauses and conjunctions.
  2. Sentence Types Tic-Tac Toe. Students will play classic games of tic-tac toe against a partner with an added challenge of identifying sentence structures.
  3. A Sentence Types Challenge Board Game. In this one, students work in groups of two to four players to review independent clauses, dependent clauses, sentence types punctuation rules, and subordinating conjunctions. This sentence structure game board has three different versions so that students can play multiple times.
  4. A 30 Question Editable Sentence Structure Quiz. Use it as an assessment or an additional review activity. For review, cut the questions up into strips, and have students take turns drawing a slip and answering the question with their group members. The questions are fully editable in PowerPoint.

What You'll Need:

  • For the sentence types challenge, each group will need one die and game pieces. You can use anything for game pieces that you would like, including small squares of colorful paper.
  • I recommend spending some time laminating or printing parts of the games on card stock so that they last longer. You can also use sheet protectors and dry erase markers.

Required Background Knowledge: Please make sure you have taught students about all four sentence types before asking them to play. Each activity included features sentences that are simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. In addition, students will need to know the difference between a run-on, a fragment, and a sentence. If you need resources to teach the four sentence types, I have them! See the links below.

These sentence structure review activities and games are intended for use in junior high or high school. *This resource is not yet ready for online learning. Digital updates are coming soon!
